How to get started with Kedgelog, and the questions that come up most. If your answer is not here, the contact address is at the foot of this page.

First three steps

  1. Add your boat. A name is enough to start. Length, beam, draft and engine can follow later.
  2. Add gear, one item at a time. Use + on the Locker tab, or take items from a reference checklist (free).
  3. Enter the date stamped on the item. If the stamp gives only a month and year, choose “Month” — it is kept that way.

Frequently asked

Does it tell me what my boat legally has to carry?

No. Kedgelog does not determine what your boat is required to carry. It has no way of knowing what is actually aboard. The screen shows a count — N tracked, M not set, K expiring — never a pass or a fail. Confirm what you must carry with the responsible authority or inspection body.

My stamp reads “EX10/24”. How do I enter that?

Choose “Month” in the expiry field and enter October 2024. It shows as 2024-10 on screen and in the PDF. The calculation treats the end of that month as the effective date, so the item stays in date through October.

What is the difference between “No expiry” and “Not set”?

“No expiry” means the item has no expiry date at all — anchor, oars, bucket, compass. “Not set” means it has one and you have not entered it yet. They are counted separately. If you switch an item to “no expiry” after entering a date, the date is kept aside and comes back if you switch again.

How do I log an inflatable lifejacket?

Enter the date stamped on the gas cylinder or the automatic inflator, not on the jacket itself. The gear form says so where you enter the date.

I am not getting reminders.

Reminders fire 90, 30 and 7 days before a date and on the day. If nothing arrives, check (1) iOS Settings → Kedgelog → Notifications, (2) “Remind me before a date arrives” in the app’s settings, and (3) the line on the departure screen: “Reminders set for M of N items with a date.” Items with no date entered get no reminder.

Do reminders stop if I don’t open the app all winter?

No. Scheduled reminders arrive whether or not you open the app. On top of that, Kedgelog nudges you once a quarter to open it and look.

I deleted an item — will its old reminder still fire?

No. The schedule is rebuilt on the spot whenever you delete an item, change a date or toggle “no expiry”. It does not wait until you next open the app.

Can I start a passage without running the pre-departure list?

Yes. Blocking the record would be the wrong thing to do in a hurry. What is recorded is that the list was skipped, and the passage carries a “Skipped” badge.

Do I have to rebuild the checklist every trip?

No — it carries over from the previous check. Add and remove items freely.

Which regions have reference checklists?

United States (4), Japan (4), France (4), New South Wales (2) and Victoria (4) — 18 categories in all. Each carries its source name, URL and the date it was checked. Queensland, Italy, Spain and Croatia are deliberately not included: we could not read the primary source verbatim, and we do not write quantities from guesswork.

Nothing appears for my region.

The wording distinguishes three cases. “No statutory equipment list for private pleasure vessels has been identified” means we checked and none exists (UK under 13.7 m, Germany, New Zealand). “We have not yet confirmed whether one exists” is exactly that. “Not included yet” means it is on our list. In every case, adding your own gear on the Locker tab gives you the full app.

My track has a gap in it.

Location is used “while using the app” only. Closing the app stops the track, and it does not resume until you open the app again. The gap is left out of the distance and reported as “There are N minutes of missing track in this passage.”

The distance doesn’t match what I expected.

Distance is the sum of great-circle distances between recorded points, with stretches under 0.5 knots (a boat swinging at anchor) excluded. If it still looks wrong, enter the distance yourself from the passage detail.

Is it safe to share a GPX file?

As exported, it contains your mooring. Depending on who sees it, that tells them where the boat is kept. On the export screen you can drop the first and last 5 or 20 points of the track.

I am changing phones. Can I move my records?

Use “Settings → Export & backup → All data (JSON)”, then “Restore from a JSON file” on the new device. Both the export and the restore are free.

Does the JSON include my photos?

No. Export them separately with “All photos (ZIP)” (part of full access). CSV and PDF are for reading and printing and cannot be restored.

Does it sync between devices?

No. The app performs no network requests, so two devices hold separate data. Move or share data with a JSON file.

What does full access add?

Free already gives you unlimited gear items, expiry reminders, pre-departure lists, the reference checklists and JSON export. Full access lifts the one-boat limit and adds GPX, CSV and PDF export, exporting all photos, and moving gear between boats. There is no subscription.

My purchase isn’t showing.

Try “Restore purchases” in Settings. You must be signed in with the same Apple Account you bought with.

If I get a refund, do I lose my records?

No. Boats beyond the first become read-only. You can still read and export them, and their expiry reminders keep arriving.

Can I change the display language?

Yes — “Settings → Language”. The default is your device language. 34 languages are available.

Can I hand this PDF to a surveyor or an insurer?

The export is a record you entered, not a certificate, and it is not designed as a submission format for anyone. Ask whoever you are submitting to what they accept.

A piece of gear is damaged or out of date. What should I do?

The app is a record-keeping tool and cannot advise on servicing or replacement. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions, your chandler, or a service agent.
